Signs of Illness

ROLE OF THE SCHOOL NURSE

First aid and medical care provided by the school nurse is primarily for illness and injuries that occur at school during the school day. The Health Center is not a primary care facility like a doctors' office. By law, the nurse does not make medical diagnoses, prescribe treatment or medications, but can provide treatments and medications prescribed by a physician with a doctor's order and/or parent permission.

WHEN A STUDENT BECOMES SICK

Please do not send your child to school if they are sick. Children can not learn if they are not feeling well. Please do not send your child to school if they show these symptoms:

  • Temperature/Fever 100.0 or higher
  • Vomited within the last 24 hours
  • Diarrhea x2 within the last 24 hours
  • Not Fever free without the use of medication (such as Tylenol and Ibuprofen) within 24 hours.
  • Constant runny nose/cough
  • Unexplained rash
  • Reddened eyes with yellow/clear pus or drainage
  • Severe headache
  • Painful earache
  • Severe sore throat
  • Severe stomachaches/body aches
  • Swelling to face/neck
  • Severe injury without follow up from Physician

Please do not send a sick child to school for the nurse to decide whether they should be in school. Students arriving at school- should be well and ready to be in class. Parent/Guardians are the first to provide primary care to the student. If in doubt, call your family physician, to help direct your health care for your child. If your child is sick and has been absent more than 3 days due to illness or has frequent illnesses- please contact your primary physician as they may need further care. Please see 'absence from school' page on side bar of nurse page- to help direct you on absence information for your child.

WHEN A STUDENT HAS AN INJURY AT HOME-

If your child sustains an injury at home or off school campus, please take care of it at home. The Nurse is more than happy to take care of injuries that happen during school hours, but the nurse is not here to take the place of your primary physician's evaluation and treatment. If your students' injury requires additional support at school or any excused time frame from physical education/activities at school- Physician Notes and Orders are required or we will not be able to make accommodations. Additional DVUSD medical forms may be required to be completed by parent as well. The School Nurse and our school staff can help support your students as needed when they return to school from an injury with proper communication from parents and physician documents.

WHEN STUDENT BECOMES SICK AT SCHOOL OR HAS AN INJURY AT SCHOOL-

If your child's symptoms do change while at school due to illness or have an injury at school and they do visit the nurse, the School nurse will assess your child's symptoms. If concerns are minor and they do not have any symptoms listed above or don't need additional medical attention- they will be treated at the health office and sent back to class. Every classroom has a first aid kit to address minor injuries or concerns in the classroom to support to a student as needed. If there are concerns with your child's health while at school from illness symptoms or injury- you will be contacted to discuss their health concerns and they may need to be picked up from school. Please keep your primary numbers up-to-date for contact home when needed. It is a parents/guardians' responsibility to make arrangements to pick up an ill or injured child as promptly as possible. At times, a nurse health report note may be sent home with child for communication to parent/guardians that did not require for student to go home during school hours, but for parent/guardian to be made aware of a health concern for further monitoring at home if needed.

There are NO stocked medications at school. If you do wish to bring in some 'as needed' medications- Please see Medication page on side bar of nurse page to help direct you on forms and information for medications at school.

REMINDER TO PARENTS-

If every parent follows these procedures above, it will save much suffering and prevent the spread of contagious disease, some of which may be life threatening.

As always, HANDWASHING is the best defense against the spread of germs and illness! Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds for best measures.
